Robert,
Thank you very much for this info. Janet Shafer-Beck and I have been working on this branch for a long time. I would like to discuss your post in an effort to sort out some of the conflicts and misconnections I have with your information.
My primary questions are:
How was the conclusion made that your John Murrray Ogden (1808-1871) was the same John Ogden that married Jannette Kendrick on 11 Dec 1829?
2. How was the conclusion made that Jannette Kendrick is the daughter of John Kendrick and wife Mary?
John Ogden (abt 1805-1884) and Janette Kendrick (1815? - 1873) are my 2nd great grandparents and their son William Ogden (1848 - 1919) my great grandfather. Based on my research my John Ogden (abt 1805-1884) married Janette Kendrick (1815? - 1873). The documentation follows later in this post.
If my John Ogden (abt 1805-1884) are the same person as your John Murrray Ogden (1808-1871) there is a conflict with this excerpt from the book cited in your post:
1-THE BOOK,"OGDEN FAMILY IN AMERICA" BY WILLIAM OGDEN WHEELER,PAGE 109 READS AS FOLLOWS.?WILLIAM OGDEN,BORN 21 MAY 1766,DIED _?-,MARRIED SUSAN MURRAY,DAUGHTER OF JOHN MURRAY AND HANNAH LINDLEY.?CHILDREN
1-ELIZABETH OGDEN,BORN ?,DIED ?,MARRIED G.W.GILES.
2-MURRAY OGDEN,B ?,DIED ? (THIS TURNS OUT TO BE JOHN MURRAY OGDEN AS YOU WILL SEE)
3-HARRIET OGDEN,BORN ?,DIED 18 AUG 1895,MARRIED JOHN FREEMAN YOUNG.
4-MARY MURRAY OGDEN,BORN 29 SEPT 1792,DIED 20 JULY 1881,MARRIED MURRAY HOFFMAN.
5-SUSAN LINDLEY OGDEN,BORN 26 SEPT 1804,DIED 20 NOV 1862,MARRIED LINDLEY MURRAY HOFFMAN.
The conflict I have with the above is that my John Ogden (abt 1805-1884) had at least two siblings Mary and James. Based on my information (which follows) Mary Ogden married William Berry in Markam, Ontario. Mary may also have married George Wonch. John’s brother James is not listed above as one of his siblings. So I am not convinced Murray Ogden is John Murray Ogden and the same John Ogden (abt 1805-1884) that with little doubt married Janette Kendrick (1815? - 1873).
The following is suggestive that John Murray Ogden is Murray Ogden on pg 109 of the “History of the Ogden Family”?
2-JOURNAL OF THE SENATE,STATE OF NEW YORK,1855 HISTORY.AS FOLLOWS.
"MR HOPKINS FROM THE COMMITTEE ON CLAIMS,TO WHICH WAS REFERRED THE BILL ENTITLED "AN ACT MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR AND AUTHORIZING AND DIRECTING PAYMENT OF AN AWARD MADE BY THE CANAL APPRAISERS AND CANAL BOARD TO MARY MURRAY,JOHN R MURRAY JR,JOHN MURRAY OGDEN,HARRIET R OGDEN,MURRAY HOFFMAN AND MARY,HIS WIFE,AND ELIZABETH GILES,IN THEIR OWN RIGHT,AND JOHN R MURRAY AND HENRY W WARNER,EXECUTORS AND DEVISEES OF HANNAH L MURRAY,DECEASED."REPORTED IN FAVOR OF THE SAME WITHOUT AMMENDMENT WHICH REPORT WAS AGREED TO,AND SAID BILL COMITTED TO THE COMMITTEE OF THE WHOLE."
My research shows that John Ogden (abt 1805-1884) and Janette Kendrick (1815? - 1873) married in Canada in 1829. I believe that they lived across the border in Niagara County, New York for a period after marrying and then returned to Canada before moving to Michigan. This is based on a 1840 U.S. Census of Lockport, NY showing a John Ogden at the head of a household with a women and children the same ages and sexes consistent with his children. Also, the said birth places of some of their children is Niagara County, NY. .However, I have not been able to prove this. Based on census info they clearly moved to Michigan before 1857, settled, and lived there for decades with their 7 surviving children.
Bottom line is how do we prove my John Ogden is your John Murray Ogden? My John Ogden moved to Michigan before 1857 from Canada. I found a deed showing my John Ogden purchased land from the US government in 1857. They were pioneer farmers in Sanilac County, Michigan. Would he have won an award from the NY State Senate in 1855 and have moved to Canada then to Michigan and purchased land there in 1857? There are so many people by the name John Ogden. As much as I would like my John Ogden to your John Murray Ogden I don’t see evidence that it is likely. But, it is possible.
Here is some the info I have:
From the Marham Museum I have this information regarding their marriage:
"A Transcription of the Register of Marriages 1918-1843" of Reverend William Jenkins, Richmond Hill, Ontario; Ref# 280, 11 Dec 1829, Groom/Bride;John Ogden, Jane Kendrick, Proclamation/Licence;P, place of marriage:Markham, Wit.;Mary Ann Berry, James Ogden. If Janette Kendrick was born in 1815 she would have been 14 or 15 years old at the time of her marriage to John Ogden, really?
Also included in this transcription are the marriages of John Ogden’s (abt 1805-1884) brother James (1812-1875) to Phoebe Schell, and his sister Mary Ogden (1817-1893) to William Berry.
I obtained a family history document that was written by Henry Franklin Ogden (1878-1939) based on the information given to him by his mother Eleanor Adelia Armstrong who was the wife of John Ogden (1839-1899). John Ogden (1839-1899) is the child of John Ogden (abt 1805-1884) and Janette Kendrick (1815? - 1873). I was given this document by Henry’s son Bernard M. Ogden (1925-). Here is the transcription:
