Frances,
As I said I would I applied for the marriage certificate for Sarah Hemlin & James O'Gara.
The records office replied that there should not have been an entry in the index as the certificate was not completed (i.e. marriage not legally registered).
The index is down as Sep 1862 Hanlin Sarah Chorlton 8c 587 O'Gara James Chorlton 8c 587 However the certificate was not issued; the GRO stated that the names had been filled in (presumably in advance) by registrar but no other details with a notation stating that the couple did not marry as they had not given notice in Manchester.
Person at GRO stated may have had church wedding in advance but not civil registration.
Found Sarah Hemlin's birth certificate (Himlan), born in Manchester, Lancashire, England 3 Jul 1839. Mother's maiden name down as Salmon. From LDS find Thomas Hinlan married Catherine Salmon 06 JUL 1828 Description: Cathedral, Manchester, Lancashire, England.
No more details.
Anything else you have on the O'Garas/Hemlins would be great.I just stop with the generation born in Ireland because I've not been able to find out anything else. My Mum says Paul O'Gara has traced O'Garas back to Ireland (Ronan O'Gara the rugby player's village but she's a bit sketchy with details). Also what happened with Dudley and Ellens children would be interesting; I know very little
