It turns out that Hazel OFFUTT’s mother, Ruth GOODELL, was the one who married someone named DUKE. By tracking Ruth through census records and the CA birth and death records, I learned she was married three times:
M1) to Ernest L OFFUTT as given previously. They had Hazel Patricia and Charles Lynn.
i. Hazel Patricia OFFUTT was born on 1 Sep 1906 at CA. Her birth was also reported as circa 1902. She married first on 6 Mar 1920, at Ocean Beach, San Diego county, CA, David Hiram WALLIS Jr, son of David Hiram WALLIS Sr and Mattie Elizabeth JOHNSON; they divorced and married again later. She married Kenneth L. 'Mac' MCDONALD. Hazel died on 12 Jan 1949 at Santa Clara county, CA.
ii. Charles Lynn OFFUTT was born on 17 Jul 1907 at San Diego county, CA. He may have been on the 1930 Federal Census of Los Angeles, Los Angeles county, CA, enumerated 4 Apr 1930, as Charles L Offett (rents for $35, 25, married at 20, b. IL, father b. MO, mother b. CA, bookbinder-publishing house) and Annie (wife, 24, married at 21, b. CA, father b. MO, mother b. Germany). He died on 28 Aug 1967 with a last residence at Los Angeles, Los Angeles county, CA.
M2) to Mr. MORRISON. They had two sons: Stanley L. and Max W.
M3) to John R DUKE. They had no children.
Ruth and John appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of El Centro, Imperial county, CA, enumerated 15 Jan 1920, as John R Duke (rents, 41, b. TX, father b. ME, mother b. NY, agent-real estate) and Ruth (wife, 39, b. CA, father b. TX, mother b. CA). The enumerator apparently switched the birth places of their parents. Also there were Stanley Duke (son, 5, b. CA), Maxie Duke (son, 3 6/12, b. CA).
Ruth and John appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of El Centro, Imperial county, CA, enumerated 11 Apr 1930, as John R Duke (owns home worth $4000, 51, 1st married at 35, b. TX, father b. TX, mother b. MO, salesman-illegible) and Ruth (wife, 49, 1st married at 20, b. CA, father b. ME, mother b. NY). Also there were Stanley L Morrison (step-son, 15, b. CA, father b. MO, mother b. CA), Max Duke (step-son, 14, b. CA, father b. MO, mother b. CA), and Florence C Farewell (lodger, written over what looks like mother-in-law, 56 married at 20, b. MO, parents b. MO, agent-dress goods).
Ruth died on 18 Mar 1959 at Imperial county, CA.
Evidence supporting the identity of Ruth and her three marriages includes:
a) Ernest OFFUTT was on the 1910 census of San Diego county with wife Ruth (age 28) and children Hazel (6) and Charley L (3). Ernest and Ruth were married 9 years and living next to George GOODELL.
b) CA Birth Index listed Charles W OFFUTT b. 17 Jul 1907 with mother's maiden name GOODELL.
c) CA Death Index listed Charles L OFFUTT with same birth date and mother's maiden name CADELL (a phonetic match).
d) The only Ruth on the 1900 San Diego census of the right age and born in CA was Ruth GOODELL. The birth places of her parents George & Theresa GOODELL match the parents of Ruth OFFUTT in 1910.
e) 1920 census listed John R DUKE with wife Ruth (age 39) and sons Stanley and Max.
f) 1930 census listed John R DUKE with wife Ruth (age 49) and stepsons Stanley MORRISON and Max DUKE. Again, the age and parents' birth places match Ruth GOODELL.
g) CA Death Index listed Max W MORRISON with mother's maiden name GOODELL.
