ERNEST L. OFFUTT was born on 18 Jan 1867 at Audrain county, MO, son of Clagett Offutt and Jane Pinkney Buckner. He married circa 1901, at CA, Ruth Goodell, daughter of George William Goodell and Theresa Bennett. He died in 1924 at CA after moving there as a young man.
He appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Wilson township, Audrain county, MO, in the household of his parents, as Earnest Offutt (3, b. MO). He appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Audrain county, MO in the household of his parents, as Earnes Offutt (son, 13, b. MO, at home, parents b. MO).
Ernest probably appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Corona, Riverside county, CA, enumerated 15 Jun 1900, as Earnest L Offutt (boarder, b. Jan 1870, 30, single, b. MO, father b. MD, mother b. KY, laborer-day). In spite of discrepancies in his age and parents places of birth, this has to be Ernest.
Ruth appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of National City, San Diego county, CA, at District 187, enumerated 2 Jun 1900, as Ruth Goodell (daughter, b. Aug 1881, 18, single, b. CA) living with her parents George W Goodell (b. Dec 1844, 55, married 31 years, b. ME, parents b. ME, teamster) and Thressa (wife, b. Jun 1850, 49, married 31 years, 7 children, 7 living, b. NY, parents b. NY) and brothers Robert (son, b. Jun 1887, 12, b. CA), and Archie (son, b. Dec 1889, 10, b. CA).
Ernest L. and Ruth appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of National township, San Diego county, CA, enumerated 29 Apr 1910, as Ernest L Offet (42, married 9 years, b. MO, parents b. MO, electrician-Light Co) and Ruth (wife, 28, 2 children, 2 living, b. CA, father b. ME, mother b. NY), next door to Ruth's parents. Their children Hazel and Charles Lynn were living with them.
i. HAZEL OFFUTT was born circa 1904 at CA. She married (___?___) Duke. She appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of National township, San Diego county, CA in the household of her parents as Hazel Offet (daughter, 6, b. CA). Hazel appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Banning, Riverside county, CA, enumerated 6 Jan 1920, as Hazel Offut (roomer, 19, single, b. CA, parents b. CA, telephone operator). Also in the household were her brother and John L or C Offut (roomer, 45, married, b. CA, parents b. MO, mechanic-gas co), whose relationship is unknown.
ii. CHARLES LYNN OFFUTT was born on 17 Jul 1907 at San Diego county, CA. He died on 28 Aug 1967 at Los Angeles, Los Angeles county, CA, (last residence). He appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of National township, San Diego county, CA in the household of his parents as Charley L Offet (son, 3, b. CA). Charles appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Banning, Riverside county, CA, enumerated 6 Jan 1920, as Lynn Offut (roomer, male, 12, single, b. CA, parents b. CA) in the same house as his sister.
I was unable to find either Ernest or Ruth on the 1920 census, and none of them appeared in the 1930 census. Ernest Offutt supposedly died in 1924, so perhaps Ruth remarried.
If anyone knows more about Ruth and Ernest L. Offutt or their descendants, I would love to hear from you.
