Unico, FAMILY HISTORY: LEST WE FORGET-.A FAMILY HISTORY; 1720-1800; privately published; LDS Film #1 035658, item 2.6Unico says David had nine children. These nine were all married in OH in the appropriate time period to be David's children. CENSUS-RESIDENCES: AIS, Search 2 & 3: lists David in Salt Creek Twp., Wayne Co. In 1830, he appears in Salt Creek Twp., Holmes Co. Holmes Co. was created out of Wayne Co. in 1824. CHILDREN: Do not know which children are by which wife, nor the name of the second wife. RESIDENCES: Wallace Officer says he left Chester Co. after the 1790 Census and moved to Cumberland Co. where he appears as member of the Big Springs Presbyterian Church in 1792. Moved on to Washington Co., PA in 1797 and joined his cousin James, son of Alexander, who had moved there in 1794. These Washington Co. Officers are the source of the family name in western PA and OH. CONFLICT-. Sarah Eckels says: "My great- grandfather Officers name was Alexander. He had two sons, John (my paternal Grandfather) and James. He (Great-Grandfather) had two brothers, Thomas and William. Thomas had three sons, two of whom settled in Washington Co., PA and the other in Kentucky. All had large families. William Officer had no children." COMMENT: Wallace Officer is descended from William Officer and therefore, obviously, this information is incorrect. She is probably referring to Robert OFFICER who had no male children.1, 7 & 4

19,20.Lesley Wischmann, Laramie WY believes that Alexander was probably the father of James, David and Jenat, based on the information found in theIGI
Officer is a rare and peculiar family name. Nothing certain is known as to its origin. There is a tradition that during a persecution of the Scotch Protestants a band of these determined Presbyterians chose a leader to direct their protection and defense, and that they all fell into the habit of addressing his as "Officer," just as we would say captain, until he was known by no other name and it was handed down to his children.
Again, it has been suggested that the real name might have been purposely dropped by his friends, especially if it was "Campbell," for at one time that name became so noted and so feared, for fierce bravery and determination to fight for the right at all hazards, that the very name was outlawed by the tyrannical king and every Campbell killed on sight.
