Hello Madeline,
thank you for your reply to my posting but I am afraid to say that I do not see any near relationship of your family members with mine.
None of the Oettingers you mention appear in my family tree or list, although some of the first or second names, such as Johann, Georg, Wilhelm and Karl, do appear but mostly in different combinations.
The 9 generations back of my Oettinger ancestors were born respectively: 1620 (where?), 1658 in Backnang, 1682 in Backnang, 1717 in Unterweissach, 1759 in Pleidelsheim, 1814 in Beilstein, 1842 in Grossbottwar, 1872 in Mangoldsall and 1903 in Mangoldsall (my father).
The one born in Grossbottwar, i.e. my great grandfather, Gottlieb Wilhelm (or Wilhelm Gottlieb) Oettinger, had 7 sons and 2 daughters, born between 1872 and 1887, some of which emigrated to England, none of them to America.
This same Gottlieb Wilhelm had 10 brothers or sisters, all born in Grossbottwar between 1838 and 1858. Interestingly, one of them emigrated to North America (probably!) and his name was Carl Wilhelm (which could as well have been Wilhelm Karl). But he was born July 31, 1840 and does not therefore seem to be identical with your Wilhelm Karl born January 14, 1858.
Two of his brothers and one of his sisters emigrated (between 1864 and 1878) to Russia and that’s why I posted in genforum.
The Oettinger born in Beilstein also emigrated, but without his family, first (1867) to North America and later (1884) to Bessarabia.
I have no knowledge of any Oettinger related with me in the area of Fürfeld/Bad Rappenau. But interestingly the Backnang/Pleidelsheim/Beilstein/Grossbottwar area of my ancestors lies only about 30 to 40 kilometers from Fürfeld and Bad Rappenau (south-east).
So, there remains some probability for a more distant relationship.
Regards
Wilhelm Oettinger
