I am trying to identify the William Odom/Odum who was appointed guardian of the minor children of Alexander and Rebecca Massey Witherspoon.
As you know, a mother could not be guardian of her minor children in that era, so William Odom/Odum was appointed guardian when Alexander Witherspoon died in ca 1826. The minor children were Lewis F., James Calvin, and Tirzah Emeline Witherspoon. They had all reached their majority in 1840 when William Odom/Odum filed his final report with the court.
I am curious about this person because Tirzah E. Witherspoon married Abner Shannon McKnight in 1846 in Cannon County, TN and she named her son Samuel Odom/Odum McKnight. Samuel is my ggrandfather.
I don't know if there is a blood relationship or if she named her son Odom simply because William was her legal guardian.
I would like to know more about this William Odom/Odum regardless.
