Bill, Here are my references for Virginia candidates for Louis Oder's Irish father. There were six Oder heads of households listed in the 1810 Va Culpeper county census, pp. 106-107 : Elwood Oder, Joel, Smith, Hester(widow of Thomas Oder), William, and Gabriel. All were born in Virginia and all were descendants of Joseph Odor of Fauquier County, so they don't fit the bill. Susanna Oder, a widow over 45, is listed in the 1810 Va census, Fauquier County, p. 354. I don't know who her husband was, but the only boy living with her was 16 to 18, so she doesn't fit either. I found no other Odor/Oders in Va census records for 1810.

In 1820 in the Culpeper County census at P.91, there were two Edward Oders, Jacob, Smith and William. One of the Edwards was actually Elwood. He, Smith and William were born in Va. I have not been able to identify the other Edward Oder or Jacob Oder. They both had boys the age of Louis in their households in 1820, so maybe one of them could be Louis's father.

In 1820 on the same page of the Culpeper County census, there was a widow, Nancy Oden, with 4 boys under 10 in her household. Later records make clear that she was actually Nancy Jenkins Oder, the wife of John Oder, who married her on Dec. 9, 1807, and he must have died before 1820. I have not been able to find out anything else about this John Oder. I have identified three of John and Nancy's four sons. They are Henry, Waller (Walter), and John. All three lived out their lives in the Shenandoah Valley. I could not find the fourth son, so he could be Louis, I suppose. I found no other Odor/Oders in Va census records for 1820. In 1830 only Smith Oder and William Oder, both born in Va, were listed in Va as heads of households. Unless Louis's father flew under the radar screen of the census takers or was not there at the end of a decade, it looks like Jacob, Edward and John would be your best bets.

I also ran across a Camden County History by J. W. Vincent (pub 1896) on the rootsweb site. Vincent says Louis Oder settled on the Osage River above the mouth of the Niangua River by 1832 and that he was a mechanic, boat builder, millwright, and farmer. Vincent refers to him in a later passage as Louis C. Oder, so this would seem to be your guy or his father. Vincent also says a William Ray lived in the same area at the same time, maybe a father of the Elizabeth Ray Louis married.

I don't know. The more you look at this, the more confusing it gets, but good luck with it. If you find the Irishman, please let me know. Ken
