Bill, Take a look at the 1870 census under Lewis Odor, Madison Twnshp, Stockton P.O., Cedar County, Missouri, page 8. This is definitely your Louis, same wife and kids. He is clearly recorded there as 50 years old in 1870. The 1860 record is so messed up I can't read it. The age entry could be 60 or 40 or something else. The 1880 census record age entry is very clear as 76, but that means he was 31 years older than his wife and 61 years old when his youngest child was born. Both are possible I suppose, but if he was 76 in 1880, then he was 57 in 1861 at the beginning of the Civil War when he served as a private in the infantry. Pretty rough duty for a 57 year old guy. I've come across records of officers in the Civil War that old and older, but no foot soldiers past their mid-40's. My guess is the correct birth date is closer to 1820 than 1804. It would be important to know the right birth date because there are a limited number of Oder family members in the 1810 and 1820 Virginia census records and it would seem that Louis's father would have to be one of those people who has a young boy in his household that fits Louis's correct age. I have studied those records for my own line. If you want those references, let me know and I'll send them along. Ken Oder
