Dungloe High School must have opened about 1951 or 1952 when the two Masters O'Donnell returned from London the Father having his full pension and the son being fed up with the interference and paperwork of the London Education Authorities deferring his pension with them.
At first Tom Cusack and Rev Canon Mulloy PP arranged for the Masters O'Donnell to use the local Technical School Building during the day, as it was used for vocational courses in the evening.
The local community had built this technical school out of its own funds using free local labour, and then 'given' it to the Dublin Dept of Education.
There was an immediate demand for places in Dungloe High School as many who could not afford to send their children to Letterkenny Dioscian Seminary [Grammar School] to board found their children could attend locally.I suppose some local parents also withdrew their children from Letterkenny where they were boarding.
The Roman Catholic hierarchy had ignored West of the mountains hitherto, but when pupils' income was lost from the Dioscian Boarding school it unfairly attacked Dungloe High School to the annoyance of Rev Canon Mulloy and Tom Cusack and the Masters O'Donnell not to mention the local people of Dungloe.By representations of a sneaky nature to Dublin The Hierarchy got Dungloe High banned from using the Dungloe Technical School Building.
Well that put the cat among the pigeons!
Tom Cusack my father was not insenced but he and Canon Mulloy got together.Campbells Hotel owner was an old lady who wished to retire and her son wished to go elsewhere.Tom Cusack married up the needs of a local entrepreneur who opened a cinema beside the hotel on the yard's ground bought from it.The Masters O Donnell took over the building [I presume as a result of an advance arranged by my father] and re opened Dungloe High School beside the Northern Bank Ltd., Branch.Local people got the hotel rooms altered using their own free labour. Game set and match to Dungloe and the towns two masters!
The education given was of a very high nature and included Latin and Greek as well as a soundly taught curriculum which did not need equipment.
As a result of all this Gaot Dobhair which had also been totally neglected by the Church got a new Church High School about a year later.!!!!!
Cheers
Mike Cusack.
