Or, of course, Ackerman could be a misspelling of Ockerman, being a Dutch vowel-shift same as that resulting from the German "von" becoming "van" in Dutch. We do know of a long line of unquestioned Dutch Ackermans in New Amsterdam/New York City, which could set-up a spelling prejudice.

Where is that village in Germany? My family stories had it that our branch of Ockermans came from just east of Berlin. I have found an old map (early 1800s) which spells the Ukker River, NE of Berlin, as Okker. A person from there would reasonablly be known as an "Okkerman."
