Dear Julie,

I believe that Elizabeth Oxner Kelch, daughter of Jacob Oxner, may be my great great grandmother. I am taking the liberty of sending the results of research that I have been doing on this part of my family in hopes that you might have information that could help in proving that Henry and Elizabetn Oxner Kelch were the parents of my great grandfather.If you can help me, I will be most grateful!

I would like to know if Henry Kelch is my ggrandfather JOHN KELTNER’S father.

I believe John was born in Newberry District, SC about 1795. This belief is based on the following two Parke County, IN census records.

1860 Lists John Keltner (age 67) and Margaret Keltner (age 65) living with their son William Keltner and family. John and Margaret are listed as having been born in SC.

1870 Lists John Keltner (age 76) living with Lofton Teague and family.

John served in the War of 1812 in Tucker’s Regiment under Captain Lewis Hogg. He was discharged at Bluford about 1 May,1812. These papers were filed 20 Oct 1871 in McMinn County ,TN where John,77 years old, had gone to live with his daughter Drucilla Swafford .He declared that he had married Peggy Conar, deceased, on 22 Aug 1813 at Newberry Dist.

Daniel and Henry Keltner also served in Tucker’s Regiment South Carolina Militia, in the War of 1812. I believe that they were brothers of John.

In the Revolutionary Roster of SC Patriots written by Bobby Gilmer Moss, HENRY KELCH is listed on page 522;
       “He served in the Militia under Col.Waters and Capt. Lewis Hogg, after the fall of Charleston “

A.A.4189;x2578
.

In the 1790 SC census, page 78, Lewis Hogg and Martin and Jacob Oxner were near neighbors of Henry Kelch and his wife Elizabeth . The 1807 will of Jacob Oxner, Sr. gives Henry Kelch as the husband of Elizabeth, daughter of Jacob.

From the Felix Oxner Bio;(on the internet)

“Jacob Oxner obtained a 200 acre survey in 1771 near Broad River above Second Creek. 50 acre part of this tract was sold in 1793 by Henry Kelch and wife, Elizabeth to Zachariah Hogg (Newberry Deeds G-263). Deed says tract was given to Henry Kelch by grantee. Part of the same survey was sold in 1814 by Jacob Oxner, Jr to Samuel Wood
(Newberry Deeds L-205).”

On page 98 0f the 1790 SC census is the name William Conner. In the SC Land Grant Book page 075 Film 0022537 is the record of the purchase of a tract of land by William Conar – one hundred acres situated in the District of Orangeburgh in the Swamp of the Water of Ediston . This was made on 3 April 1785 (or ’86). Could this be the same person? There are two additional entries of purchases, one by William and another by William,Jr.

Thank you for giving this your attention.

              Miriam Phillips
