Hi,
I think maybe I can help a bit with the mystery. There is a very old Ochs and Landau family in Frankfurt that can be traced back to before the 1400s.(They are exactly the same line). If you google "goldschmidt and tripod" you will find parts of it there.
I'm researching my HAAS line and the towns of Homberg (Ohm) and Mardorf where they lived.I believe that this line also connects to the old Frankfurt famlies. Now on my Haas tree there is a 1786 marriage between a Falke LION (part of my Haas line) and a Hehnle Ochs in Homberg (Ohm). This Hehnle Ochs was the daughter of Löw Moses Ochs of Frankfurt. So I know that there were frankfurt Ochs in Homberg.I also took a look at that 1898 marriage record for Bernard Ochs and Amalia Greenberg. If you take a look again you will see that Bernard's birthplace is given as "Homberg".This is Homberg (Ohm) NOT Hamburg!!!So we're totally looking for the same family.
A friend of mine is in the process right now of transcribing the birth, marriage and death records for Homberg (Ohm). He just finished the birth records, but there isn't one Ochs on the list!!He did tell me that he found a death record for a widow of an Ascher Ochs.So I don't quite know why your Bernard isn't there.
Please write me OFF of genealogy.com and I can send you more information.Maybe we can figure this out!!

PS. re.Joseph Landau, do you think that could possibly have originally been Landes or Landauer?Landauers were also in Homberg (Ohm).
