Griffith's Valuation of Ireland
Posted by: Daniel Ogletree (ID *****7512) Date: February 10, 2006 at 11:15:44

This valuation, carried out 1848-1864 list every leaseholder or land-holder in Ireland. It serves as the census since no earlier census exists.

In 1848 there were Matthew, Michael, John, Mary, Martha Mary and David listed. It is interesting to note that some of these names also are listed as early immigrants to the Americas. I guess we can assume that the names were so common that duplication was prevalent. However, Matthew and Michael are in Markethill where some OCHILTREE researchers reflected their ancestors of the same name being from.
