A biography/family history of Joseph P. O'Brien, Havre, MT, is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, pages 704 & 705.

Joseph P. was born, 23 Aug 1863, son of Patrick and Mary (Duley) O'Brien, both born in County Galway, IR. Patrick came to Louisville, KY, as a young man and worked on the railroad. Patrick and Mary were married in Louisville, KY, and had two children: William (a railroad engineer who lost his life in an engine boiler explosion, 1911, Greenfield, MO); Joseph (Havre, MT). Patrick died in 1892, age 81, Lafayette, IN.; Mary died in 1872, age 46.

Joseph was educated in the public schools of Lafayette, IN. At age 14 he began clerking in a wholesale & retail store in Lafayette and worked there for seven years. He then went to work for the Louisville, New Albany and Chicago railroad as a fireman. Four years later he went to Fort Scott, KS, to work as a fireman on the Kansas City, Fort Scott & Gulf railroad until 1894 when he moved to St. Paul, MN, as engineer on the Great Northen railway. On 7 Jul 1895, he located to Kalispell, MT, having been assigned the run between Minot, ND, and Spokane, WA. About eight months later he moved to Havre, MT, continuing as a passenger engineer on the Great Northern. He became the owner of a prosperous grocery store in Havre, which in his absence was run by his son.

On 4 Apr 1903, Joseph married Elizabeth M. Bailey, born in County Carey, IR. O'Brien children: John J., and Elizabeth M.
