Lillian, I am going to make the assumptions that you don't live in the Marquette County area and do not have an exact date of death. With those assumptions in mind, here are a couple of suggestions. First, I would seek Johnson's death record which, if extant, can be obtained from the Marquette County Clerk. Alternatively, the death records have been microfilmed (LDS FHL 1007539, title "County Clerk Records Vol. 3 1899-1912). The procedure for obtaining a death record appears fairly straightforward and the fee reasonable. I believe that they can do a search without the exact date of death but you might want to verify that possibility. The link for their website is:

Insofar as an obituary is concerned, you might want to contact the Peter White Public Library in Marquette. I understand that they will do an obituary search but I am unsure as to how far back their records cover. Perhaps someone has abstracted genealogical data from old newspapers. The Library should be able to advise you. The link to the library is:

On the homepage, go to library service and then click on "Genealogy/Local History"
Lastly, I would certainly try to obtain the mine accident report. Just some cursory searching tells me that each county in Michigan had a Mine Inspector and many, maybe all, of the reports for the period in question survive. Possibly these reports have been microfilmed, I know some have been abstracted and posted to the Internet. I can only guess that the originals may rest in the State Archives or similar repository. I imagine that the Library or local genealogical society can tell you exactly how to obtain a copy. Who knows what you might find in such a report.
Perhaps you have already tried the above but, if not, maybe this will help. Good luck.
