The English scribes often recorded the German names with English versions. i.e. Ober is German for over. Also they often misunderstood the German pronunciation. Oberlin was pronounced oh-bear-leen, therefore the Oberly and Overly. One of my ancestor's 1776 Pennsylvania probate papers has his name spelled as Oberlin, Oberley, and Overly in the same document.
