Prinz Ludwig ###### http://www.heritagepursuit.com/Hancock/HancockFindlayTV.htm HENRY BYAL, retired farmer, Findlay, was born in Stark County, Ohio, March 23, 1817, son of John and Elizabeth (Newstutter) Byal. He is the fourth in descent from Byal, who settled in Baltimore, Md., from Paris, France. Elizabeth Newstutter was a daughter of Henry Newstutter, who served as a Hessian soldier with the British under Burgoyne was captured at Saratoga and never exchanged. He came to Ohio in 1809 and settled in Stark County. John Byal came with his father, William, to Ohio in 1809, when a lad, and after spending twenty-three years in Stark County moved to this county in 1832, where William died in 1840, followed by his son John in 1853 * (his widow surviving him about six years). They left a family of nine children-four sons and five daughters. Our subject, when a young man, worked on a farm and attended the saw-mill of his father. Upon reaching manhood he engaged in farming, and cleared up a nice place for himself, which he rented in 1847 and embarked in merchandising in Putnam County; retiring from that after seven years' successful experience, he returned to Findlay, where he has been identified with many different interests since, principally, however, in baying and selling real estate. He was married, in 1842, to Dorotha Comer, who bore him one son and three daughters, of whom Mary Elizabeth, wife of S. D. Houpt, is the only survivor. In 1860 Mrs. Byal passed away her life in full communion with the Methodist Episcopal Church, and is buried in Maple Grove Cemetery with her children: Squire C., Amanda and Ida. In 1862 Mr. Byal was again united in marriage, this time- with Mary, daughter of the late Jacob Lamb. Mr. and Mrs. Byal attend services at the Presbyterian Church, of which he has been an efficient official. He has always been a cordial supporter of measures tending to the advancement of the interests of Hancock County, and has served this city and township in useful official positions. CAMPBELL BYAL (deceased), son of John and Elizabeth (Newstutter) Byal, was born in 1835, and reared on the farm which he subsequently owned, in Findlay Township, this county. He took great pride in this property, and built upon and improved it until he had made it one of the moat beautiful farms in Hancock County. Campbell Byal always took an active interest in the development of the social and industrial life of this locality, and was for many years a prominent spirit in the United Brethren Church, but the breaking out of the war of the Rebellion created considerable dissension in that body, and Mr. Byal chose a quiet retirement from church matters. He served as infirmary director two terms, and as member of the school board of his district for several terms, also in many township offices. He was happily married in this county to Anna, daughter of Joel and Amy (Sherman) Pendleton, and to them were born three sons and one daughter: John Melville, Nora M. , Clement L. and Leslie L. Campbell Byal departed this life August 11, 1881, and his remains are buried in Maple Grove Cemetery. ######## http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=judithnoh&id=I5989 ID: I5989 Name: Conrad NEWSTETTER Sex: M ALIA: Conrad /Nienstedt/ Birth: BET 1754 AND 1759 in Ammensen, Lower Saxony, Germany Death: BEF APR 1826 in Tuscarawas Twp., Stark Co., OH Military Service: BET 1776 AND 1778 Hessian Dragoon in Brunswick regt. This Conrad Neustetter/Niestaetter has been featured in books, has been mentioned on numerous mail lists as a Hessian soldier, it was even said that he was captured at Yorktown, VA., in 1781. He had been found in the 1790, 1800 and 1810 US census as living in Cumberland County, PA, and at least two of his children are born in Yorktown, VA. This is what Karen Kuehnis, a descendant, found in the 'History of Stark County, Ohio." I know I looked for this name before and again, and not only in the Rolls of the German auxiliary troops involved in Yorktown, the Kassel Regiments von Bose and 'Erbprinz, and the Kasssel Chasseurs, but also the Ansbach- Bayreuth troops, but I cannot locate him in my files. Frankly, it drives me nuts, any of you has better luck? I believe Catharine was one of the children of Conrad Neustetter, who may (or may not) have been a Hessian soldier. How about this as a headline - The miracles of our AMREV-HESSIANS mailing list. Thanks to the new information provided by Judith, I think we have a 'Bulls Eye', her mentioning of her ancestor soldier Konrad serving under General Burgoyne and was captured at Saratoga did the trick. (Ruth Ann are you listening?) Your ancestor is the Brunswick soldier CONRAD NIENSTEDT, born appr. 1754/55 at Ammensen, now 31073 Delligsen-Ammensen, which is about 132 km north of Einbeck, Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony). He was a Dragoon of the Brusnwick Regt. Prinz Ludwig, who indeed was captured at Saratogo, marched as prisoner to Winter Hill, Boston, and escaped (they call it deserted) on 13. Dec.1778 on the way toVirginia in a place they called Iveritt, but which is really is Everitsstown, N.J. the town the Convention troops went through that day. Cheers, John From: Judith <DisplayMail('neo.rr.com','jrosenbe');jrosenbe@neo.rr.com> Sent: Thursday, February 15, 2001 10:36 AM Hello John. I have recently been working on this line-- good to know, others are as well. His daughter Catharine (m. John Oberlin) was my ancestress. I have found that some of his descendants left Stark Co. & moved on to Findlay in Hancock Co. OH (daughter Elizabeth & husband John BYal) and Freedom Twp. in Portage Co. OH (son Conrad). The Byal family features in a county history for Hancock; according to that one, Conrad I was a Hessian soldier who served under Gen. Burgoyne & was captured at Saratoga. Daughter Sarah married Jonathan Miller and some Millers are biographied in Stark Co. According to their bios, Conrad was Swiss, not German, and sold by his guardians into service in Napolean's army, from which he deserted and made his way to America. I, too, have browsed some volumes listing Hessian soldiers who served & stayed and have not found him. However, I was probably not creative enough when looking. With several more weeks of census searching, I have found the name entered variously as Neistetter, Nistetter/Nisteller, Nystetter/Nysteller, Nighstetter, and several other very garbled variants. I found Conrad II yesterday living with his daughter Mary Newstetter Thayer in Portage Co. No idea how he was indexed, since I cruised all the N's and there was no entry for him. Perhaps as a K---- or R----. I would be happy to share any of the info I have gathered so far on him & his descendants.
