Having found your forum, I would like to share some informations about the Obenland name. The Obenland name is a german name. I see you have found some Obenlands travel to America in the 18th century. It can be traced down several hundred years and comes from "Oppo". Oppo was... what is the english word for "Stammesfuerst"... leader of a county, I think. The "oben" in Obenland has nothing to do with the german word "oben", meaning "above" or "on top", so you can't translate "Obenland" to something like "living in the higher regions" or even "highlander" or such a thing. In fact, Obenland means "someone living in the land of Oppo". Other family names have the same base, Oppenheimer for example. The region of Oppo was around the german towns of Heilbronn, Stuttgart and Schwaebisch Hall in the south region of Germany. This hasn't changed, as a quick look in the german telephone books reveal. Most of the Obenlands here in Germany live in the Heilbronn / Stuttgart area even nowadays. Greetings from the lake of Constance, Mike Notify Administrator about this message?
