Whooey!I made a dive to my filing cabinet for my folder on Alcanon J. O'Bannon. Here's what I found:
The death date of June 1879 came from a group sheet prepared in the 1960's, before the days of online census images and indexes, by an indefatigable O'Banion researcher who had made many trips to the FHL at the Oakland, CA LDS temple.I entered her work into Brothers Keeper in the late 1980's, but had not looked at the folder since until now!
Now I also see in the folder a 1990's descendant report printed out from The Master Genealogist by Patrick O'Bannon, now of Cincinatti, OH, who contributed considerably to this forum in those days. There, he puts Alcanon's death as "circa 4 Aug 1880."This makes sense if Alcanon was seen by the census enumerator as late as 25 Jul 1880.
Patrick did not cite his source, but he descends from Alcanon's older brother, Algernon Sidney O'Bannon, of Cass Co, MO, and as a PhD in history, Patrick knows how to trace genealogy.Currently he has suspended genealogy, having recently remarried and wishing to enjoy his new family.
In rechecking your message I could not find Alcanon by name in any of the online census indexes.I had go to the 1880 images for Elizaville, Fleming County, KY, and to Household #350 to find them.In all three available online census image publications, the quality of the image is very unreadable.Alcanon's entry appears to be "Obanion, Alkann," age 70.His and his parents' birthplaces are unreadable, although I know from other sources Alcanon was b.in KY, his father b.in VA, and his mother b.in KY.
One puzzler on the census is a "daughter" Martha, age 48.This would put her born in 1832, seven years before Alcanon married his first wife Charity "Harriet" Runyon in Mason Co., KY on 14 Apr 1838.What do you have on this Martha?
Patrick did not have, but I have, a third wife for Alcanon: a Mary E. Watts, b.abt. 1803, d.15 Jul 1875, bur. in Poplar Run Cemetery, east of Elizaville. This info presumably comes from her headstone.
But where is Alcanon buried? At Poplar Run also?
Do you live in that area so you can research locally?I would think there would be histories of Fleming County which would have featured the local doctor and given his death date, 4 Aug 1880, or whatever.
Regards, and looking forward to further exchanges.
Paul O'Bannon, Vallejo, CA
