In Reply to: MARTIN OATS - 1840's? CORNWALL by Rick Oates of 76

My Grandfather (Thomas) was killed in a mining accident in 1926 when my dad ( Edward Thomas) was just 3 years old.

His mother (Violet Marion Barnicoat) then remarried.

My dad married Joan DOOLE in 1946 after the war. He served in the Vetinary Corps in France. After the war he worked in retail at Reading, Sherbourne & later in London.

the family emigrated to Australia in 1967 ... (Edward Thomas, Joan, Phyllis (17), Me (Sue.. 12), Roger (11)) ... docked at Melbourne after travelling on the Fairstar ... settling in portland Vic where we lived as a family .. we were sponsored by the Methodist church .. my dad was actively involved in the church until illness just before he died. My father and mother lived in Portland for the entire period of their residence in Australia ... my mother has since moved to Heywood ... a property that they purchased only months prior to dad's death.

My sister & brother continue to live in Portland ... I am interstate (midwife). I have 2 children (Emma- Perth, Kevin - Melb)
