Oatman Family Genealogy Forum
I'm not sure how much detail you want about Olive's earlier life, but I have quite a bit. After her release from her captivity in early 1856, she lived briefly in El Monte, CA, with members of the original wagon train. She and Lorenzo then went to live in the Rogue River area of Oregon, near the present city of Medford, with the families of Harvey and Harrison Oatman, sons of Royce's brother Harry. She and Lorenzo returned to California, where Olive spent six months in school in the Santa Clara Valley. While they they attracted the attention of Royal B. Stratton, a Methodist minister in Yreka, CA, who eventually helped them write the book and then took them back east. After a stay with the Sperry family near Rochester, NY, Lorenzo went back to Whiteside Co., IL. Stratton put Olive on the lecture circuit while he, in turn, furthered her interrupted education. Olive married Major John Brant Fairchild in 1865 in Rochester, NY; he died in 1907. They adopted one daughter, Mary Elizabeth "Mamie" in 1873, who was later married to Alister MacKay Laing. Still searching for info on her marriage.
Olive and John Fairchild are buried in Sherman, Grayson Co., TX. A website called "findagrave.com" (I think) will give you a photo of Olive's grave.
If any other info is needed, let me know.
