It sounds like you have made a good start to your Oates family history research.
It’s quite possible that there will be descendents of Sarah Oates that are still alive and who would be willing to meet with you and exchange information. Many of my breakthroughs in terms of information happened because I was able to find other people descended from Charles Oates who had done work on his history.
On the same forum where you replied to my posting, there is a forum board where you can post messages to England. Posting a message here about Sarah Oates would increase your chances of finding out more about her life in England before she immigrated and would bring you in contact with any English descendents also looking for information about her.
The reference section of your local library may be a good source of information – if you tell the librarians you’re looking for information on Sarah Oates and John Jefferson, and that they immigrated to Tasmania, they’ll be able to tell you what information they have in their collection that will help you.
Check out the website for the York Reference Library –they have many records too and I think you can order documents from them for a price.
You might also be able to order Samuel Oates’s birth certificate so you can trace the family back further.
Cemetries sometimes have DVD’S containing photographs of headstones and plaques and because there was one for Ranelagh cemetery I was able to see photos of all my Oates’ family headstones.
Cemetries also have records online and it might be easy to find out where Sarah and John are buried.
