On Sarah's Death Certificate she states her father was Samuel Oates - a weaver. Mother is unknown. This is not unusual in my earlier family I find. If the children were not in contact with maternal family members, there was no way they would know her maiden name and women were rarely called by the Christian name after marriage. John (24), Sarah (23) and Ada(3) Jefferson are listed on the 'Index of assisted immigrants into Tasmania 1841-1889' microfiche and arrived in Tasmania on the 'Merlington' in 1854. The 'Merlington' dep London and arrived in Launceston on 20th October 1854. Lavinia was born at Port Sorrell near Devonport. With all the information I have I have found a Samuel Oates in the 1841 Census with a daughter named Sarah of the right age. Whether I have it correct I am not sure yet. Suffice to say, he was the only weaver (called a "fancy weaver") from Yorkshire, with a daughter named Sarah of that age. The other children in that family were: Ellin, Ken, Martha, Joseph, Ann, William and Mary. So that's my bare bones. On the surface it does not look like we have a match, but stranger things have happened. John and Sarah moved to Newcastle very soon after Tasmania, and it was there they had most of their children, before shifting to Sydney. There was a huge Jefferson enclave at Burwood, with a number of homes owned by the Jefferson family all in one area. I had thought this side of the family would be the easier section to trace, but it is by far the hardest and most frustrating. I have sent you by email Sarah and John's Death Certificates. thanks for your speedy reply Merryl Notify Administrator about this message?
