My mother was Shirley Oates, daughter of Lou Oates, who was one of three brothers (Bert and Len) in Kalgoorlie, Australia. Their ancestors were supposedly sent to Australia from Cornwall. They all eventually moved to South Africa, where many relatives remain. My mother married an American, moved to the US, and then to Costa Rica where I was born. Her brother (Ron) committed suicide on his 21st birthday, which led to her father making her promise to have all her offspring use Oates as their middle name to keep the name going. That is my, my brother's, and my son's middle name for that reason. Does any of this ring a bell for you? Maybe we're the black sheep of your family?
