Wasn't John Y. Oates the grandson of Stephenson and Pharibia Oates. Here are the descendants of John Oates and his wife Sarah surname unknown. John and Sarah are buried in the Oats Cemetery in Cameron North Carolina. 1

Oates Jr., Martin John: Roots, Seeds, & Other Things Vol. II pp. 166,67. Since John's eldest son's name is William Young Oates, perhaps William's mother was Sarah Young. She was born in 1789 and died in 1847. Also who was Pharibia Carraway's father wasn't his name John. Adam Carraway, who married my aunt Susannar was her uncle. Thanks for any help.
