I am seeking information about a JOSEPH OATES b. c.1785. He married in 1813 to a JANE BOWES in Whitby, East Yorkshire. They had a son FREDERICK OATES.
Joseph was reputed to have been the Harbour Master in Whitby at some point.
I understand he is buried in Whitby, in a graveyard overlooking the sea: though again I do not know the date of his death.
We have no idea where he came from or his family: he may have been from outside the Yorkshire area.
Can anyone help with information or ideas as to how I might trace him please?
