Oates from Newfoundland to NY, USA

I am researching my mother's "Hughes" surname and now an Oates line from Isabella Caroline Hughes Oates of Newfoundland. She was born to John Hughes and Sarah Clunn, and John to policeman Thomas Hughes possibly of Tyrone Co. Ireland.

Isabella married Thomas Joseph Oates and they settled in Heart's Content. They had a son named Edward around 1900. He appears to have married a Laura (Gaulton?) and come to New York, USA. They appear together in the 1930 Census with daughter Edna. They also appear in 1936 traveling for what looks like a visit to Newfoundland.

I checked the SSDI and have confirmed that Edward Oates d. Dec 1971 Brooklyn is NOT him. However, there is a Laura d. May 1981, but the exact date is unknown. The local library in will not assist with an obit (e.g., Newsday?) without an exact date. I can't get the d.c., either.

Any help you might provide will be greatly appreciated.

-=Michael
