I think most of the OATES family from South Carolina are descended from Stephenson and Pharibia OATES of Darlington Distrect S.C. Stephenson was born in Wayne County North Carolina in 1764 he married Pharibia CARRAWAY in 1783 in Sampson County their eldest children born from 1784 to 1800 were born in Moore County. The family moved to Darlington around 1802. James's grandson William James was funder of the town of OATES. Stephenson died in 1817. Stephenson had a brother Samuel that also died in South Carolina in Fairfield in 1801. He married Fannie CANNON. They had six children. Fannie OATES was born in 1762 Sam in 1760. She died in Northwest Alabama in 1841. The cemetery in Barton Alabama needs saving grave robbing and vandalism needs to stop. Any suggestions.
