Hi Graham, The family records I inherited said that the Oates name came from the Vikings of Norway that raided the coastline of Scotland in the early part of the first Century. The earliest recorded date of the Oates name is 1066 (if I remember right). The name was spelled Oats or Ots or combinations thereof. The name is found in Scotland in the 1400's in the middle of the country, so they had migrated South. Then in the middle 1600's part of the family moved to Northern Ireland. By 1730 thry started migrating to America, where the name was still spelled Oats. Sometime in the early 1800's the spelling changed to Oates. There are still Oates in Northern Ireland (Counties Tyrone, Antrim and Armagh), and in Scotland around Stirling. I cannot find any in Norway. No heraldry that I know of. These were the merchant class and proud of it. No Lords in our family! There might be a tartan, but I doubt it. I cannot find any Clan that they allied with. If you are interested I will dig out my notes and send you what documented evidence I can find. Good luck! Terrie Williams in Oklahoma, USA.
