What's in a name?

Hi all,

Today I was up in Skipton and came across one of those Heraldry stalls where they advertise "Your Surname History scroll printed in only 90 seconds."
I don't know about anyone else but I for one don't trust them and as a true Yorkshire man prefer to keep tightly hold of my £6.95 and hope to find information from more reliable sources.
I was wondering if anyone out there has actually managed to discover the origins the Oates family surname. Has anyone ever given way to temptation and bought one of the scrolls or surname books and would be willing to share with everyone else here? (Is the Yorkshire man in me showing through?)
By the way I married an Oates and am looking back into her tree atm. Anyone related to a Bradford Oates would be nice to hear from. See if we can link the branches.

Graham
