I also am just getting started, AND MY MATERNAL great-grandfather is William Hardy Oates born in Kentucky 5 Oct. 1882 and married to Emma Horner! My mother is Patsy A. Oates, her father was William Elbert Oates. (His youngest sister is still living in Tucson.) Here is the oral story from our family: William Hardy Oates was a twin. Their father was John Oates also born in Kentucky. The story goes (I haven't been able to confirm this!) that John murdered a man in Kentucky in a duel. Because of this he had to leave Kentucky immediately. I have two version regarding what happended to the twin. One twin went with the John (or both twins did) but their mother did not leave with them. I do so look forward to hearing from you!
Emma Horner according to oral tradition is connected to William Harrison Horner who founded Hornersville, Missouri. I have not been able to prove that connection. If it is true, the William Harrison Horner lineage is extensive and very well researched.
