I have been trying to find information about a Jacob Oats and his wife Elizabeth who lived at least a short time in Somerset county, PA. They are in the Brothers Valley census in 1850. The only mention of them after that is there is an Elizabeth Oats in the 1860 Somerset county census living in the Somerset county Poorhouse. They had a daughter, Rebecca, bn 7 Sept 1841 who married Cyrus Berkey of Somerset also. Cyrus and Rebecca eventually moved to Westmoreland county and are buried in the Ligonier Valley cemetery.
I went to Somerset recently and was disappointed to find that although there are excellent records for the Poorhouse from 1900 forward, there is nothing from before that time. The courthouse also has no marriage records before 1885. Apparently there was a fire sometime in the past that destroyed a number of records.
The book that you have mentioned, "Gathering Oates, . . ." - did you see it in a library? Also, from what you have copied, can you tell if there is anyone who connects to the Jacob and Elizabeth I am looking for?
