Found this today... Easley Progress Issue 12 Sept 1929 Told by Annabel Oates Tollison Granddaughter of Rufus & Mary Oates. Robert Oats and Fannie Reed Oates (English & Scotch) and their six children came from Cumberland Co.,PA in the winter of 1777 or 1778 to North Carolina. One son William Oates (1731-1815 married Jane Sloan (1744-1819 and settled on Muddy Fork Creek in Cleveland Co.,NC. They had nine children. One son William Oates (1777-1856) married Elizabeth Epsey in 1806 and settled in Cleveland Co.,NC. They had 14 children. Rufus Oates (s/o William & Elizabeth Epsey Oates) b. 1812NC d. 1876 Easley,Pickens Co.,SC. married Catherine Cargil in 1845. They had one son, John Mason Oates who died from typhoid fever while fighting in the war btw. the states. In 1852 Rufus married Mary Ann Germaine and came to Pickensville,SC from Shelby,NC. when he was 21 years of age. His sister Fannie Oates md. William McMahan was already living in the Georges Creek Community. (Easley,SC.) Rufus was a magistrate,millwright and one of the largest land holders in the upstate. Rufus Oates purchased 1,5oo acres of land btween Hwy 8 & 135 down to Brushy Creek Road. His homesite was located on the spot where Geer Memorial Baptist Church now stands. Grandmother owned slaves because I saw a picture of the home where she and two very tall black women were standing in the backyard of the home working. These two women are buried in the Oates Cemetery.One man slave was named Mose Rufus & Mary Ann had 13 children Sarah Oates m. Samuel Roper, Fannie Oates m. John O Sheck,Jasper Oates m. Louella Fowler & 2nd Janie H. Welborn had no children,Newton Oates m. Ester Margaret Stott m. 2nd Mandy Laboone,Little Sis Oates died while a baby,Joseph Oates m. Fanny Williams, Mary Roxie Oates m. Jay Smith, Samuel Oates m. Miss. Harris of Central,Henry Oates was killed while a young man, Augusta Oates m. William Johnson Rufus Oates b. 13 Nov 1812 Cleveland Co,NC. d. 18 April 1876 Easley,Pickens Co. Wife Mary Ann Germaine b. 29 Jun 1830 Va. d. 8 July 1897 Easley,Pickens County,SC. Both Buried in Oates Cemetery - Easley Note I'm not a relative but familiar with their family cemetery and I know 1 descendant of this family. Just passing along this helpful info.
