A few years ago, Lisa McCoy requested some info on the parents of Mary Jane Oaks(Matthews)on this forum, but her eamil has changed. Mary Jane's father was Rasaw Oaks and her mother was Lliddya/Lydia Stevens. Lydia was the daughter of John Stevens The family appears on the 1860 Cumberland Co TN census but that is the only place I have ever been able to find him. Rasaw abandoned the family before 1870 apparently. Lydia and Mary Jane can be found on subsequest Fentress Co TN censusus, and I think they were in the Little Crab Community. Rasaw is not on the roster of any Confederate of Union unit and I tried every state and spelling of Oaks/Oakes. There is a large landholder in Cumberland Co TN with a similar name but the wife's name and age does not quite match up. There was also a family legend that Rasaw sold the original property for the Cumberland Co TN courthouse, but that does not appear to be true. The first deed in the Cumberland Co deed book is for the courthouse property and it was not sold by Rasaw Oaks. There is a family legend that Rasaw was Dutch, but he is clearly born in NY. I am not sure if he skipped to Holland to avoid service in the Civil War or if his mother was possibly a Dutch immigrant. There is possibly some confusion with the original name of NY (New Amsterdam) or maybe he was from Amsterdam NY. Any information on Rasaw Oaks is greatly appreciated.
