Wilson Oakes, a long time resident of Moose Heights who was deeply loved and respected by his family, friends and community passed away June 8, 2008 of cancer.
Wilson will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 61 ˝ years Olive, children , Jim (Nancy) Oakes, Lorelei (Terry) Croy and grandchildren Toby Oakes, Coralee Oakes, Bart (Rena) Croy, Shawna Croy and great grandchildren Darian & Delany Oakes and James Croy. Predeceased by infant daughter Olivia, son Jack, sisters Audrey Vogt, Lucille Koshma, brother Allan (Sonny) Oakes and parents Allan and Ida Oakes.
(James) Wilson was born June 30, 1922 in Daysland, Alberta. In May 1933, the Oakes’ family packed up (after a short time in Vancouver) and headed North to the Cariboo. He served his country in WWII in the navy where he travelled the world, returning home February 14th, 1946 where he courted and then married Olive Mufford. During the following years Wilson worked very hard providing for his family. He was a self employed logger, operated a sawmill and farmed. “Wiss” was an accomplished musician and we are fortunate to have warm memories of him playing his guitar at our celebrations. He loved to play games such as horseshoes and cards and loved his animals. Enduring many good times and hard times, including the tragic death of their teenage son Jack, Wilson remained strong and dedicated to his family and friends.
In the later years, Wiss and Olive moved into town to their new home at the Fraser Village. It is here that they met many great friends, enjoyed countless visits with family and friends and celebrated numerous occasions. Throughout his life, Wilson struggled with his health but always managed without complaint. He was quiet in his ways but left a strong impact on all those whose lives he touched. He will be dearly missed.
Olive and the family would like that the Doctors, Nurses and staff of G.R. Baker who took such good care of Wilson. Thanks goes out as well to Clayton’s Funeral Service for making the arrangements and to the OAPO Golden Centre where a tea honouring Wiss’ life was held June 12th. Finally to the family and friends who sent cards, flowers, meals and made donations we thank you
