Debbi,

On the 1900 census Lena Stell, a widow, & daughter Bertha are living in Lyons. Lena`s birthdate is given as Sept. 1836 in Germany with an immigration year of 1854. On the 1880 census in Lyons, Magdalena ia listed as Malhlung Stell, age 40, b. Alss. & she is the head of household but listed as married. Her children are Charles, 10, Birtha, 9, Gurthen, 5 (female) & William 3. A George Stell, age 40, married, b. Alsess, is living as a hired man in Arcadia with the Goetzman family. There is a 21 yr. old Emma Stell living as a domestic with the Towar family in Lyons in 1880. She could be your Emma Louise.

In 1870 the Stells are in Lyons; George, 29, b. Alsace, Magdalena, age 29, b. Alsace, Emma L, 6, Clara H., 5, George E., 2 & Charles E., 1, all born NY. In 1860 a Lany Fox, 22, is living in Lyons in the household of George & Louisa Sisson. Another Lany Fox, age 19 is in Lyons with Seth & Jane Starr. These girls may be one & the same given how often the census takers make errors on ages. She is listed as a domestic in both households. In 1860 George Stell, 20, is in Arcadia, Wayne Co. as a farm laborer in the home of Goerge Ehrhardt.

You should be able to get death records for both Magdalena & George from the Lyons town clerk, although George may have died in Arcadia. NY began requiring death registration in 1881. Those records may tell you their parents names. Most town clerks will make atleast a ten year search for a small fee.

Pat R.
