Apologies if this appears more than once, my server keeps zapping me in the middle.
The book is "Arms' Crossroads - Wallington", published in 1982 by the Wallington Cobblestone Schoolhouse Restoration Committee. The Macintosh "History" and Cowles "Landmarks of Wayne County" are used as sources.
William Walling is described as an English immigrant who had been living in Lyons. He is said to have been a participant in the War of 1812 and to have married Catherine before that. He purchased land at Arms' Crossroads, now Wallington, from Ezra Blanchard in 1833. Lyons surrogate court and land deeds records are footnoted.
He built the stone building which still stands at the corner of the present Ridge Road where it crosses Geneva Road. He called it the Walling Hotel and there is a stone slab over the front doorway which has the words "William Walling" and "1834" carved into it. It was also known as the "Half-way House", due to its location on the Oswego-Lewiston stage-coach line.
The index lists a Phoebe Walling, but I missed her in the text. If I find more on this family I will post it here.
C.S.
