The Erie Canal was considered to be the largest engineering feat of its day and for several decades was the primary means of transportation between the Upper Midwest and the Atlantic Ocean. I'm not from Wayne Co. although many of my ancestors were. I was born and grew up within a couple of blocks of the Erie Canal and currently live within sight of it.
