Can't find my Riley on the 1880 census, have searched high and low! Oscar married and lived in Illinois, Melvin married and lived in California, Riley married in Iowa, died in Wisconsin. Have lots of fill ins, but can't seem to figure out Riley's whereabouts pre-1888 marriage. There was a notation in a family bible that is NOT in my possesion from the Davis side that Riley's parents died when he was young and that he was raised by a Dr. As I have traced his father George Riley, I know this isn't the case. His mother died young, but his father was still well alive when Riley was an adult. Riley's obit clipped from a Wisconsin paper stated, "he came to DeKalb county, Illinois when he was young with his parents." I can't seem to back this up with anything, as his dad was still in New York. His brother Oscar ended up in DeKalb county Illinois and raised a large family there. Melvin dissapears after the 1880 census, and I believe I found him married to an "Emma", in California. No idea if they had children. If anyone could help me fill in the blanks, it would be much appreciated. I do have census info for the "Smith step-children" of George's and someone had posted that Gertrude and Cynthia were in fact sisters, but I can't find proof to this. As Melvin was raised by his grandmother, and her last name was Divine, I assume that she was married a second time as well. (The family info have received is that Gertrude and Cynthia's maiden names were LeRoy.) Tonnes of Divine and LeRoy's in Sullivan County, just hoping someone could help me connect.
