This information may be of some help in your investigations of Catherinetown. Technically there are two possible answers to your question. First the counties in New York State are divided into townships. The town of Catherine was formed from Newtown, which is became Elmira, Chemung County, on March 15, 1798. The towns of Catlin and Veteran now in Chemung County were taken off in 1832. A part of Newfield, Tompkins County was was annexed June 4, 1853 and a part was added to the town of Cayuta April 17, 1854.
Second within the Town of Catherine there are four villages or post offices. These are Montour Falls(formerly Havana the first settlement(1788)in the town), Alpine, Odessa and Catherines.
If I had to guess, I would say that your reference of Catherinetown refers to the Town of Catherine.
To get to Catherine head for Watkins Glen and then travel south from there on Rt. 14 and in less than 10 minutes you will be in Montour Falls where the Schuyler County Historical Society is located and a good place to learn more about Catherinetown.
Good Luck, George Farr, Historian, Town of Elmira and member of the Schuyler County Historical Society.
