I am searching for the family of my 3rd gr grandfather, Orson Stanton. He is from Otsego, NY. He married Susan Pope (whose mother was Fanny Stanton and relates back to Thomas Stanton & Ann Lord). I have never found a public marriage record for Orson & Susan. The marriage certificate found in Orson's military file was probably written by his grandson who was the town clerk as proof of Susan's marriage to Orson in order to receive Orson's veteran's pension. Of the witnesses shown, Eliza Stanton & Simon Pope, their identities are unknown. Eliza could have been a relative of either Orson or Susan (Susan's mother was Fanny (Frances?) (Stanton) Pope. Simon (should read Simeon) Pope was Susan's brother. He, like Orson was a tanner by trade. Perhaps that is where the two men met? The marriage took place in Otsego Co., N.Y. where Susan, and probably Orson, lived at that time. The document indicates Lawrence Town, but that should read Laurens Town(ship. I don't know anything about Orson's parents or siblings. On one of his records I saw an Oliver Stanton as witness, undoubtedly a relative. Orson was born around 1819, I've been looking through the 1820 census for Otsego Co., N.Y. Found 6 heads of family named Stanton. Five of them have a son in Orson's age category. Although the census records list Orson as a farmer, he also was a tanner. After settling in Pana, IL he established a tanning business in the basement of the Flint Hotel, later called the Frances Hotel on the northeast corner of Main & Locust. Does anyone have any information on this family? Thanks, Jean Notify Administrator about this message?
