There are probably others who would answer better than I, but I was out in that general area a few years ago and had good luck at the library in Cooperstown, NY. My ancestor, Thomas Stanton Gardner was born in "Cherry Valley" according to his Civil War record. The library on the site of James Fenimore Cooper's home is a wonderful source for all of that area.
