Tracking: Thomas (I) MATTESON b. 1756 RI d. ~1840 IL

I've tracked my 4gr-granfather Thomas (I) Matteson from E. Greenwich, RI to Otego, Otsego, NY ~1794-1796.
Was it a direct migration or via Vermont?
My 3gr-granfather had 1 census entry where it said he was born in VT (~1790).

Any info appreciated

Mark Matteson
