I think what Mr..Calvin was trying to tell was the situation we researchers are victims of in New York State. A few years back New York got wind of what big busines Genealogy was and the money people were willing to spend on it. So being a state which prides itself on raping its citizens with fees and taxes which are borderline legal Extortion good old New York decided to jump on the band wagon. Now Im not saying
this is the case in all the situations but it IS the norm and not the exception. If you call a
local town clerk or city clerk and ask for a copy of a record I suggest you do not mention
the word Genealogy. If you do then your are subject to additional charges. If you do not know
the exact date of the record then NY allows a clerk to charge you $11 to go see if the
record is there,EACH TIME.”Im sorry you said June 1879” $11 dollars please. Oh and
you want me to look in July 1879? That will be $11 dollars more. Get the picture? So you can
see where this can add up. $75 dollars was a kind estimate .Imagine my surprise when a clerk told me that I had to pay an
extra fee for her or him to DO THE JOB THEY WERE BEING PAID A SALARY to do
just because I was doing Genealogy.. So you see the “pimp” is not an individual trying to
push a research business but the state of NY itself.
