I don't know if you have already found the information that you were seeking.
If not, I'll pass along a couple of good sites.

For your relatives who resided in Orleans County, the Orleans County GenWeb site is WONDERFUL.

The Family Search Pilot Site is also very helpful.
The records on this site are not limited to New York.;p=2;t=searchable

I took a look at the 1860 census and I'm passing along the following...You indicated that you have viewed some census records so you might already have this..

1860 Gaines, Orleans, NY

DANOLDS, T.W., 32, Grocer, value of real estate owned - $6500., value of personal estate - $3500, born NY
Hannah E., 30, born NY
Avery V., 7, born NY
Root, Nathan, 27, farm laborer, b. NY
Root, Margaret, 26, domestic, born Ireland

By 1930 it looks like Avery was living in Wallingford, Rutland County, Vermont.

1930 Wallingford, Rutland, VT
Arey A. Danolds, 76, married @ age 32, b. NY, parents b NY, no occup
Hattie P., 69, wife, md @ 24, b NY, father b. CT, mother b. VT., no occup

If there is a particular census and name that you're interested in, I'd be happy to look it up.
Good luck. Carolyn
