My name is Chris Schmidt and I live in Brisbane the capital of the state of Queensland Australia. I am trying to do research on my gr-gr-grandfather Karl or Carl Friedrich Gottlieb KOCH and his wife Augusta Marie KOCH who arrived in New York in 1884. As one of their sons George studied at St Louis Missouri, I thought I would post my query here also.
Karl or Carl KOCH arrived at the Port of New York in 1884 with his wife Augusta Maria nee KRUGER having been born on 20 May 1837 in Gellmersdorf, Kreis Angermuende, Brandenburg, Prussia. Five children were with them on the ship: Wilhelm, Frank, Robert, Anna and George. From New York they went upstate to Medina, Orleans County. George is my great-grandfather and was born in 1874 in Schoenberg, Brandenburg and died in 1929 in Adelaide, Australia. He studied at Concordia College, Fort Wayne and Concordia Lutheran Seminary, St Louis Missouri, graduating in 1899 and accepting a call to Australia. He left for Australia, as far as I know from New York, in 1900
The following I have found out from Orleans County site on the US Genweb project. In the New York 1892 Census, they are listed as living in the township of Shelby, New York and are listed as: Charles Cook, age 55, birthplace, Germany, occupation farmer. Augusta Cook, age 48, birthplace, Germany. Annie, age 11. Robert, age 14. Frank age 21, occupation farmer. William, age 19, occupation farmer. Charles, age 6 - obviously born after arrival in U.S. George, age 17. In the 1900 census he is listed as Charles KOCH and his wife Augusta is shown as having had ten children of which seven are alive, but only the son George and Charles junior are listed as living at home. I have no knowledge of the names of the other children. Family legend is that some were fostered out for some reason and that one was somehow lost at the pier on arrival in New York in 1884. William by that stage, or Wilhelm as on the passenger list, has his own house with wife Anna born in New York, Oct 1862. Her parents are listed as being born in Germany and at that stage they were married six years. They had the following children: Leona born Jan 1895, Esther born Mar 1897, and Edward born Mar 1899. I found a marriage record for an Anna Koch, daughter of Carl or Charles KOCH/COOK born 1880 and marrying, on 11 Dec 1898 to Gustave Wodrich. I also found a burial record for a Karl KOCH that could be Charles junior from the 1892 ND 1900 CENSUS at North Shelby cemetery born July 1885 and died 18 Jul 1906. By the 1915 state census William had died but Anna are listed in Shelby with the surname Cook with Leona, Esther, Edward and an extra child Alfred having been born in the interim, his age being given as 13. I found a marriage record for a Edwin Paul Cook born in 1899 in Medina that I surmised could be Edward- maybe he had three names. He married on the 21 Mar 1923, in Shelby a Florence Dean. I also found a burial record for Esther Cook at Mt Pleasant Cemetery born 1897, died Nov 18 1918 and also a burial record for her father William KOCH at the same cemetery born 1873 and died June 2 1904 in Shelby. Carl or Charles senior had by then but I am also presuming his wife had died as there is no record for them.
Hope all that is understandable. Anyone with info please email me.
