Quite awhile ago, a year or 2 ago, I sent to the Austin List my gg-grandfather's name and asked if anyone knew anything about them. Bonnie Bigolin wrote to me that brought up more questions, mainly was the information my g-uncle gave me correct? Well, he had names from one family crossed over to the other side of the family. So I have been searching for more information and I found it late last night.
In the household of David and Amanda Austin, I found my gg-grandfather, Merrit E. Austin in the 1850 census, Lysander, Onondaga County, NY. Here is the information I found:
David Austin 45 b. Mass., farmer
Amanda 44 b. NY
Merrit E. 19
Edwin M. 17
Mary J. 16
Eliza A 14
Amanda B. 12
Esther C. 7
F****? S. 4 (female) - I can't read it.
Oscar A. 3
Almeda 7 months
All the children were born in NY.
Question: Are David and Amanda the David Austin and Amanda Potter that are listed at FamilySearch (IGI Index) as being married at Ft. Edwards, Washington County, NY in about 1827? Potter was a last name given to me by my great-uncle, although the first name was Matilda.
For the 1860 census in Cato, Cayuga County, NY, Merrit had married Prudence Canfield with no children yet. In a separate household in Cato lived David and Amanda as listed below, which leads to more questions.
David Austin 55
Ann E. 23 - Is this the Eliza A. listed in 1850?
Sabrina 14 - Is the F****? S. listed in 1850?
Adelbert 13 - Is this Oscar A.?
In the 1870 census for Cato, Merritt and Prudence have children, Charles 6 and Amanda 3. In the 1880 census, the children were Mattie 13, Hattie 9, May 5 (my g-grandmother), and Eugene 3.
In 1900, Merritt and Prudence were living with their son Eugene in Shelby, Orleans County, NY. I believe before that they were living in Niagara County, around Hartland. Daughter Mattie is buried in the Hartland Cemetery according to the funeral card I have. They may be buried there as well. I am going to Western NY soon and hope to search the area.
Does anyone know of Melvin Austin living with Reuben Canfield and wife, Frances? I believe that this Reuben is Prudence's brother. Melvin is listed as living with them in 1870 in Cato, Cayuga County, NY. He is 9 years old. Since his last name is Austin and Reuben's sister, Prudence, married an Austin, could Melvin be the oldest child of Prudence and Merritt Austin? Is this Melvin Adelbert Austin? Adelbert is the name of a brother of Merritt's. In the 1900 census, Prudence is listed as having 7 children with only 3 still living. I can only account for 6 children. The 3 still living were Lilly May, Eugene and Hattie.
Question, questions, question! Answer one and more pop up. Isn't genealogy fun? As a math teacher, I love a good puzzle. If you have any information on this family I am willing to share the information I have on Merritt and Prudence's line and would love to hear from you.
Have a great day and have fun solving all the puzzles we find!
