What is the Catholic Benevolent Legion??

Has anyone ever heard of the Catholic Benevolent Legion around the turn of the century? My great-grandfather's obit from a Syracuse, NY paper (in Onondaga Co.) says he was a member of this organization. He was buried by St. John's (I believe St. John the Evangelist church.) Just curious what it might have been. He had a life insurance policy issued by the CBL.
