Kerwin, Joseph H.,Onondaga Co. NY, 1845

  of 1902

My ancestor, Joseph Henry Kerwin, was born June 16, 1845 in or near Syracuse NY and entered the Army of the Potomac at Cicero NY. He was wounded in the Battle of the Wilderness (VA). After the War he traveled by train to southern Illinois, and settled there. My home town is Centralia, Illinois, where my mother still lives.

He was orphaned when quite young, placed in a Catholic orphanage. We believe he had two other siblings, whom he could not locate after the War, and have always been lost to us.

We have searced a lifetime for the names of his parents. JHK named his first-born "John." There are two "John Kerwins" in the 1850 Census, but are unable to confirm a relationship.
